Corvus ▶️ is a Support Champion in Paladins, added on April 29th, 2020.

Lore[ | ]

This is Corvus' official bio currently found in his champion page in-game.

The most difficult decisions test even the strongest of wills, but his will has never wavered, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. He is Corvus, The Magistrate’s Blade. He is the son of Karne, the powerful leader of the Magistrate, but it is by his own merit that he has earned the absolute loyalty of his men and instilled fear in his enemies.

A charismatic leader and brilliant tactician, Corvus will stop at nothing to see his goals realized: a peace to surpass that of the Golden Age, under the Magistrate’s rule. With the near-limitless energy of the Abyss, bent to his iron will, and those soldiers still loyal to his vision of peace, he did what no other was capable of.

Through his actions, Corvus summoned chaos, and slowly lost all he had earned, even to the grave. However, the Magistrate wasn't done with him yet. Corvus was restored... what will he do with his second life?

This is an unofficial version of Corvus' bio intended to more clearly present all currently known information regarding him. Sources can be found here.

As the son of Grand Magister Karne, Corvus looked up to his father for all the good he's done and hoped he could one day become a legend like his father. So when Karne wanted Corvus to get into diplomacy and become an aristocrat, Corvus rebelled and joined the Outer Tribunal, believing action is what leads the Realm.

Corvus spent his early life in the Tribunal, with the experience shaping him, where he would encounter many supernatural and strange forces; these encounters led him to become the Magistrate's leading expert on the Abyss, gaining his knife and powers after constant exposure to Abyssal phenomenon.

Eventually joining the Magistrate itself, Corvus would attempt to avert a crisis in the village of Seris by offering a girl to the Abyssal portal present in the village. However, this would prove to backfire, as an Abyssal Lord would emerge from the portal, take the girl's body, and destroy the village; Corvus being one of the only survivors thanks to an unknown force. However, many in the Magistrate believed Corvus had gone too far.

At a later point, becoming desperate to end the Crystal War and the slaughter of innocents that accompanied it, Corvus would lead a group of soldiers through the Shattered Desert in search of the legend of the Shattered Desert, for the power that could turn lush forest to barren desert and give the Magistrate the power it needed to finally defeat the Resistance. However, Corvus would end up coming into conflict within the desert against the Resistance as well as the time-traveler Atlas, at first gaining the upper hand, only to be repelled when Io appeared to protect her people.

Having barely escaped with his life, Corvus became fearful and desperate, believing the Resistance had gained two godlike beings on their side, he feared the Magistrate's time was running out; so many men and women had already died in the war, Corvus was desperate to stop the slaughter, which the Abyss would take advantage of. Using the body of the girl who had been sacrificed at Seris, it appeared before him, offering him a force that would annihilate anything that stood in its way. Corvus would recklessly accept, unleashing the Abyssal Lord Raum into the Realm, who immediately left to cause destruction.

Releasing Raum would significantly damage Corvus' reputation, causing him to be tried for his crimes and exiled from the Magistrate. However, Corvus remains undeterred, and with those still loyal to him, he now attempts to utilize the power of the Abyss, despite his father's wishes, to defeat the Resistance, control the Abyss, and save the Realm.

Despite the prior deception, Corvus would seemingly work with Seris at a later point to combat Yagorath.

Following Yagorath's defeat, Corvus would seemingly set up camp for his group near Serpent Beach, only for it to later come under the attack of VII, resulting in many of Corvus' men dying, with Corvus himself gravely wounded and left for dead. He would be brought in by Lian, with her calling on an old friend, Lillith, to save his life. Following this, Corvus rejoined the Magistrate, which was now under House Aico's command.

In the Lost Future, Corvus was the one responsible for unleashing the Darkness, seemingly being killed in the explosion following his release of the monstrous force.

Summary[ | ]

Corvus functions similarly to Jenos, both being able to give minor buffs to their allies using their healing abilities. Corvus is capable of healing allies that are out of sight using Mark of Fate, although his healing is reduced and he has to have an ally in his line of sight. Placing a Mark of Fate on a frontline is essential as healing a marked ally will not only increase heals given but reduce the cooldown of Abyssal Reconstruction by 1 second, allowing for more healing. Projection allows him to escape tight situations and gives him one of the best mobility options that many supports lack. Corvus lacks offensive potential in his main kit, and should avoid approaching targets that are aware of him, unless running his stun talent, Stunning Visage. To avoid being killed, Corvus should stick near corners, allies, or areas that players can use Projection effectively to escape. His ultimate is good for zoning specific chokepoints and pressuring enemies off a point or payload for a moment. Since Entropic Breach deals percentile damage, it can also be used as a finishing blow against opponents with low health. Entropic Breach is also effective as a zoning ultimate during team-fights, usually to slow down or prevent enemies from retreating. Using Chronos is required to play Corvus as a healer, as the reduced cooldown will greatly aid him in his healing.

Trivia[ | ]

Lore

  • Despite Corvus' failure at the village of Seris not resulting in him being exiled from the Magistrate, the event was still considered a step too far and was ultimately part of the reason he was eventually exiled following Raum's release.[3][4]
  • Corvus is the one responsible for releasing the Darkness in Atlas' timeline. [5][6]
  • Despite Corvus' attitude potentially making it seem otherwise, he wholeheartedly believes in his goal of ensuring the future of the Realm.[7]
  • Magistrate's Archives is Corvus' personal study, or at least used to be.[8]
  • Corvus is the one controlling Terminus.[9]
  • Vivian was originally going to mock Corvus for being kicked out, but it was decided to have her join him instead due to seeing use in Corvus. It's also been mentioned that Vivian probably doesn't like Corvus, while he probably doesn't trust her.[10]
  • Corvus looks up to his father, Karne, due to all the good and hard work he's done towards making a civil Realm.[11]
  • Corvus initially didn't tamper much with the Abyss in respect of his father's ideals, at least until he became desperate enough and listened to Seris.[12]
  • Karne originally wanted Corvus to get into diplomacy and become an aristocrat. Corvus though, believed action is what leads the Realm, which is what led him to rebel and join the Outer Tribunal in the hopes of becoming a legend like his father.[13]
  • Corvus worked with and had his early life shaped by the Outer Tribunal.[14] He also originally started working with the supernatural after receiving a medal related to his work regarding it.[15]
    • Though Corvus wasn't officially a judge like Lex or Androxus, but was instead there for more of a "training stint among the cadets", somewhat like an exchange program.[16]
    • Because of this, he didn't really know Lex or Androxus personally, more so just viewing them as "high-profile judges" who he at most had a "saw one time across the courtyard" type of interaction.[17]
    • His Exemplar skin may be how he appeared during his time with the Tribunal. The skin is of Corvus prior to joining the Magistrate, which would likely be during his time at the Outer Tribunal.[18]
    • A modified Outer Tribunal symbol is present under the cloak on Corvus' back.[19][20] This symbol is important to Corvus.[21]
  • Scars can be seen on Corvus' body in the cards Battle-Ready and somewhat in Unexpected as a result of Io's attacks against him from her card, Protectors.
  • According to the card Ominous Relic, Corvus obtained his necklace after raiding a merchant with some of his men.[22]
  • Corvus obtained his knife by constantly encountering the Abyss and doing research on it.[23] Seris had nothing to do with him obtaining his abilities.[24][25]
    • It's additionally been mentioned that Corvus already existed and had some power before Seris first showed up as a force in the Realm.[26]
  • When and how Corvus' hair turned partially white is apparently canonically uncertain due to supposed inconsistencies on the developers' part. At least one dev though, views the change as having occurred due to the combination of summoning Raum, as well as the horror that the dark magic Corvus was pursuing was an uncontrollable nightmare, implying the change was a result of extreme stress.[27]
  • When Corvus uses Projection, the teleportation indicator features the same symbol that appears when Talus uses Rune of Travel. Implying Corvus may utilize Runic magic.
  • Corvus tends to sunburn easily and prefers mountains over beaches.[28]
  • Corvus is the first NPC to have been upgraded into a full character. He would later be followed by Betty La Bomba.
  • Even being Magnus stated to NOT be canon, somehow he appears on Season 6: Emergence lore teaser which is canon. [29]
  • Corvus FAKED his death, he is currently alive because of Lillith helping Lian in the House Aico to revive him after Yagorath incident in A Deal Fulfilled .
  • Based on a dev statement revealing Viktor to be around 5'9 or 175cm tall and comparing it to model sizes in-game and out of game, it was discovered that Corvus would be around 5'6 or 170cm tall.

Cameos

Corvus appears in the following content:

Notable Characters that appear in Corvus' own content includes:

  • Other
    • Seris - Corvus Weapon Inspect*

References

  • One of Corvus' jokes "I have the power of the Abyss and Magistrate on my side! Aaaaaaaaaah!" (▶️) is a reference to a famous vine where an adolescent menacingly tells a person off-camera that they have "the power of god and anime on his side". The video ends with him screaming.
  • Another of Corvus' jokes "Summon an Abyssal Lord they said, it would be fun, they said." (▶️) is a reference to the "It Will Be Fun, They Said" meme.
  • The line "Innocence? Your innocence proves nothing." (▶️) may be a reference to a Thought for the Day from Warhammer 40k.
  • An additional joke of Corvus "Look, it's a nice coat, yes, but what I wear doesn't define me!" (▶️) is a reference to how prior to Corvus' name being decided on, the developers had nicknamed him "coat guy".[30]
  • Corvus wielding a knife in-game is a reference to his initial appearance in the Rise of Furia lore cinematic, which featured him with a knife, and led to his most popular fan name prior to his official reveal, with said name being "Knaifu the Waifu Stealer" or "Knaifu" for short; with the "Waifu Stealer" portion originating from his "stealing" of Abby in the same cinematic.[31]
  • The line "Power overwhelming!" (▶️) may be a reference to a line from StarCraft II.
  • The line "I do what I must, because I can." (▶️) is a reference to a line from the end credits song Still Alive in Portal.

Concepts

  • One of the initial proposals for Corvus suggested him as a Damage champion wielding a railgun.[32]
  • Several early concepts of Corvus can be viewed here.[33]
    • Weapon concepts, meanwhile, can be seen here.[34]
  • Pre-final concepts for Corvus show a few differences in his abilities. Originally, he seemingly possessed a "Shadow Walk" ability, while Entropic Breach was instead envisioned as a supportive ability that would heal / buff allies, with teammates affected temporarily gaining a pair of Abyssal "horns" while under the ability's affect.[35][34]
  • Corvus' abilities originally played off his knife far more heavily.[36]
  • Corvus' name was based on the Latin word for crow. Despite Corvus being introduced around the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, Corvus name had been decided on six months previously.[37]
  • Various concept art for the card Ominous Relic shows some differences from the final product, as well as different lore. The first two images show Corvus holding the knife he used in the Rise of Furia lore cinematic, only with an Abyssal crystal built into the hilt. The last image though, replaces the bag of crystals on the ground with some candles, as well as the seal for summoning Raum being present on the ground. The seal can also be seen in some of Raum's cards, such as Desperation and Triumphant Ascension.[38]
    • The first two images were originally meant to show that Corvus obtained his knife from raiding this merchant with his men, but it was ultimately changed as several people thought that Corvus was instead about to sacrifice or murder the hooded figure. As one can obviously tell by looking at the artwork, this also shows that Corvus was originally meant to wield the knife he used in Rise of Furia, rather than the one he currently wields in-game.[39][40] It's not known why the final concept with the seal was changed though, but one potential explanation could be that having crystals indicates that Corvus and his men were raiding this merchant due to smuggling or hiding crystals.
  • Concepts of Corvus' cards show an unused piece of artwork featuring a shirtless Corvus in what appears to be the destroyed village of Seris struggling to grasp his Abyssal knife.[41] This was seemingly a concept for the card Abyssal Effluxion, but it was ultimately scrapped, apparently due to the artwork showing the knife protecting Corvus from the Destruction of Seris. It was claimed this conflicts with Corvus' teaser trailer due to it showing him teleporting away from the village instead, however, Corvus' teaser trailer only shows him appearing behind a destroyed door and seemingly not teleporting away, with this scene further not seeming to be Corvus in Seris due to his hair already being white, while it was fully brown during Seris. Additionally, the final art for Abyssal Effluxion appears to show Corvus inside the village after its destruction anyway, despite supposedly teleporting out.[42]
  • There are a number of skin concepts for Corvus that ultimately went unused; these include the Abyssal Prince, Magistrate Royal Guard, Shadow Stalker, Thousand Hands, Dragon Slayer, Plague Doctor, Pyre Redeemer, Lych, Pyre "Echo Champ" Caleb, and Vampire skins.[43]
    • The Pyre Redeemer skin ultimately became Pyre-Lord Magnus and was seemingly also fused with the Pyre "Echo Champ" Caleb skin to a degree.
    • The Vampire skin meanwhile would ultimately become the Count and Midnight Royal skins.

Other

  • Corvus was not initially meant to be a recurring character, but instead a generic Magistrate officer.[44][45]
  • Part of the reason Corvus' design changed from his initial appearance had to do with making him more suited to do actions a playable character could do, with an example being how running would be difficult for him in his original appearance.[46]
  • Prior to his official name being revealed, Corvus had several names among the community, the most notable of which being "Knaifu the Waifu Stealer" or "Knaifu" for short.[47] The developers, meanwhile, referred to him as "Coat Guy".[48] Both of these names are referenced with Corvus' in-game incarnation, which can be seen in the "References" tab.
  • Corvus, Dutchman Makoa, Mernos Jenos, Battlesuit Godslayer Androxus, and Berserker Torvald are all voiced by the same person, Ricco Fajardo.
  • Corvus and Jenos's skin Mernos have somewhat related "Curses!" VGS Command, owing to the fact that they are both voiced by Ricco Fajardo.
  • The hooded individual present in the card Ominous Relic notably has a symbol on their hood that resembles a mirrored version of the symbol on Seris' hood.
  • While inspecting Corvus' knife, Seris can be heard saying "It's been awhile... friend."
  • As Karne's son, Corvus is the fifth champion confirmed to be related to another notable canon character (The others being Seris & Furia and Lex & Atlas).
    • Corvus is the only one not to be related to another playable character.
  • Corvus' default skin features his iconic large collar; however, an alternate version showing Corvus without his collar was also created.[49]
  • While somewhat similar-looking, Corvus is not present in Octavia's trailer, with the soldiers present being generic Magistrate soldiers. Though Corvus did serve as the template for them.<ref>ThunderBrush on Twitter<ref>

Champion Skins

  • Corvus Collection Render Exemplar Icon Exemplar
    • Exemplar is a person or thing that serves as a typical role model.
    • This skin shows Corvus prior to him joining the Magistrate, likely during the time he was part of the Outer Tribunal. While it's not explicitly stated to be this skin in particular, with Corvus' only other skins at the time being the "what-if" Abyssal Acolyte and the Echo Skin Magnus, it leaves only the Exemplar skin remaining.[50]

  • Corvus Collection Render Abyssal Acolyte Icon Abyssal Acolyte
    • An Acolyte is one who assists and/or follows in religious services and beliefs. In this case, Corvus would be an acolyte for the Abyss.
    • This skin is a "what-if" version of Corvus showing him if he fully embraced the Abyss.[51]

  • Corvus Collection Render Count IconCorvus Collection Render Midnight Royal Icon Count / Midnight Royal
    • The line "I am one of the most powerful beings in this realm, and they just keep asking me to take my shirt off! Seriously!" (▶️) references how many community members on certain social media sites express their intense desire for Corvus to take his shirt off.
    • The teaser for these skins is a reference to the movie The Vampire.
    • While difficult to see in-game, the medallion on these skins' hips feature an icon of Day Walker Vivian on the Count skin, while the Midnight Royal skin features an image of a unique vampire Zhin. These Easter Eggs can be seen here.
    • The Count skin appears in the That Damned Smile avatar.
    • The Count skin also appears in the You Challenged Me?! spray.
    • These skins share their theme with Temptress Skye, Devilish Skye, Pumpkin Patch Rei, and Bare Bones Dredge.
